WANTED: Advice for responding to roommate ads

I'm currently trying to find accommodation in Germany, which is about as difficult as you'd expect given that I'm doing it from Canada. I've never responded to a roommate ad before, so I'm trying to find the right balance between "uninformative" and "tl;dr". Any protips from you experienced apartment-seekers out there?
