Briefly: I have arrived safely in Germany and moved in with a few awesome roommates (although one of them is the girl I'm subletting from, and she's leaving soon :C) It's been a good ride so far. Unfortunately I have now realized how easy I had it in France compared to here; I understand nothing of what's said to me. Hopefully, that'll start to change soon.

I am trying not to make my jet lag any worse (I took a four-hour nap this afternoon, which would have been during the wee hours of the morning at home), so I'm going to try and sleep now :)

Advice, please!
WANTED: Advice for responding to roommate ads

I'm currently trying to find accommodation in Germany, which is about as difficult as you'd expect given that I'm doing it from Canada. I've never responded to a roommate ad before, so I'm trying to find the right balance between "uninformative" and "tl;dr". Any protips from you experienced apartment-seekers out there?

Guys guys guys!! I made my dragonboat team's roster for the big festival in June! That's one New Year's (kind of) resolution I was able to keep :D

Excuse me, I'm a scientist
So, I think about the xkcd comic sometimes when I read or hear comments from people that are so far removed from reality that I feel compelled to correct them:

in which I rant about microwaves )
I am kind of unsure when 'science' became a dirty word.

So guys. In the last several weeks I have clambered over a 12-foot wall, tasted sherry, swum lengths in a pool after a 5-year absence, survived my dragonboat team's fitness test, baked bacon chocolate chip cookies, made a mean pseudo-jambalaya, and learned I'm moving back to Europe in July.

Good times. Now I'm going to enter hermit mode as I get into the nitty gritty of writing my thesis.

Writer's Block: Shhh… Don’t tell
[Error: unknown template qotd]Yes, by default. I tend to subscribe to a 'don't ask don't tell' policy about a lot of things. My old high school friends could find this if they cared enough to look, but I think they're the only ones. My blogs are completely isolated from my more public online profiles (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)

For a long time I was also uncomfortable with the idea of mixing my online and offline lives. Since then I've relaxed a bit, there's a couple of you on here I've had offline interactions with, either through letters or forcing baked goods on you in person. It's no different from the "ahhh different friends in different social circles will they all get along if I bring them together?!?!" fear I have about throwing giant parties.

And now, for something completely different! My team has advanced to our divisional final in the intramural voyageur canoe race we have on campus. We had our division corrected from Undergraduate to Graduate: the thinking was there would be fewer grad teams and we'd be more likely to advance. They ran two heats for our division, top 3 in each go automatically, then 2 wildcards. As it turned out... we only managed to advance on a wildcard. Our heat was blazing fast; the times of the top four teams were in the top 20 of all teams (about 250), overall.
More ramblings!! )

First of all, thank you all for the comments on my last entry (a month ago... I remain terrible at this LJ thing). They meant a lot to me ♥

Now, in no particular order:
  • Summer, where did you go? I've caught a cold somehow. IN JULY. And while it's true my immune system really hasn't been the same since I got back from France... still. JULY.
  • Anybody who invites me over for anything or who comes for a visit is going to be force-fed Nutella-based desserts for the foreseeable future. For some inexplicable reason that jar is not disappearing. If you have a good recipe, please share!
  • I had my first real celebrity sighting last week: 'that guy from Glee' was sitting in the next chair over at the salon. Pity I don't actually watch Glee...
  • Nature Chemistry is running an essay contest ("In Your Element"), and I'm pretty stoked about entering. Unfortunately, I've let the deadline sneak up on me, but I'm pretty confident I can hammer something out. Currently flipping through Le problè'me des métaux dans la chimie antique for a bit of inspiration. :D
  • Saw Deathly Hallows: Part 2 on Friday evening. What a fun ride :) (And, in further proof that I am a complete sap: I sniffled a bit even though I knew exactly what was coming.)

The annual post post

I have been pretty MIA lately. Basically, my life has been filled with:

  • Research (two months and I still haven't got this thing to work!)
  • TA-ing (why can't my students read burets properly? Also, why does marking take so long?)
  • Class (Only one this term, but three the next... mince)
  • Dodgeball (Good times.)
  • Concerts (In no particular order: Phoenix, BSS, Stars, the RAA ♥)

Despite all that, I still want to send people things in the mail (Christmas cards, post cards, random greeting cards)! I promise I am more verbose with a pen in my hand than a keyboard under my fingers...

Comments are screened, leave your address, and if you have a preference about what I send you. :)

this oughta make up for something
Here is the monster post about my nine months in Europe. I've focussed mostly on the travelling bits, since daily life is still daily life.

I'm back in Canada now. For starters, this means I can maybe finally log on to LJ (it never worked well in residence.)... )

And hey---where did all the polar bears go?
01 March 2010 @ 10:54 pm
LJ hasn't been loading well for me lately.

But basically:

So when you ask me where I was when Sidney Crosby banged home Jarome Iginla's desperate pass, I'll answer: "In an American-style pub in France with an Anglo-German-American and a Chinese-Norwegian who calls Canada his second home."

What a beautiful game.

Bonne année 2010!
Sooo.... Happy New Year, everyone! Hopefully you're all doing well.

I have spent the last two weeks mostly not in Lyon, and away from a computer... so I'm trying to furiously flist now and catch up on all the newsy news.

As for my holidays (thank you for asking) I spent a few days on Strasbourg (in Alsace, close to the German border... okay, basically on the Franco-German border, you can walk into Germany from there.... AND I DID) and then nearly a week in Paris.

It's such a cliché, but... Paris, je t'aime. Also, I'm not done with you yet. Free admission to the Louvre? YES PLEASE.
20 September 2009 @ 07:38 am
A la prochaine....
Well, my bags are about 90% packed, and my flight leaves in a little over 12 hours. I don't know when I'll have Internet access again, so until then... take care, everyone!
12 September 2009 @ 11:54 am
I haven't had time to flist much lately, and I'm sorry for that. On the other hand, I have been quite busy getting the new people in the lab up to speed, and worrying about my future in general :P If there's an entry you want me to read, link me, please.

But! I come soliciting advice. I know some of you have studied abroad. I know some of you travel extensively. What packing advice do you have for me?

*waves hello*
So hello to my new friends from that friending meme I posted yesterday. I have to admit I've never done one of those before, so I'm completely new at this... )

In other news--I'm heading off to a conference for a few days, where I will be giving a talk on my thesis research. I should probably practice my talk a few times before then. And pack. I might want to pack for this.
