Writer's Block: Strange Conversations
[Error: unknown template qotd]

I actually once met a woman on the bus on my way to school who had also done a chemistry degree there. We had a good chat about which kinds of chemistry were interesting, which were difficult, and how chemists really have a responsibility to the environment.

The best exchange, though, went something like this:

Her: "I had some really interesting professors, though... I bet they're all retired now."
Me: "Maybe not, I've had some that are fast approaching retirement. Who'd you have for inorganic?"
Her: "I can't remember his name. Who did you have?"
Me: "Professor L---."
Her: "OH! Did he make you memorize the periodic table? I just never saw the point of that, I mean, you could always just look it up, right?"
Me: "That's him all right."
Her: "He was pretty young when I had him, so he must be really old now."

Also: Currently in the depths of thesis hell, will not resurface for another little while; apologies for neglecting the flist, I'll make it up to you guys eventually.

I have a 10-page paper due tomorrow. It's getting there; I'm writing on the artist as portrayed in L'Oeuvre of Emile Zola. At least I'm not writing on Rousseau this time.

On the other hand, digging up quotes you know are in the novel but can't find is not exactly my idea of a good time. =\

[This time last week I was frantically writing a paper for my organometallics class, and it amazed me how quickly I could come up with those words, especially when I compared it to my previous 10-pager. OH WHY, LIT, WHY? I remember when I actually enjoyed writing lit papers. Of course, they were shorter back then....)

So uh, quick question:

Where does this icon come from, and where can I find the original image(s)?

(I found it going through some old files with a super-descriptive numerical name. *le sigh*)

Get off the sidewalk!
I passed my Level 1 road test today and can now drive with a slightly less restricted license.

(I still don't enjoy driving--or parking--but at least now the government thinks I can do it.)

boom de yada indeed
Well--the new PC is online (literally) after a week of wondering "WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH THIS THING?!"

Now for that fun part of setting up a new PC--installing everything you're used to. :D

Boom de yada!
I love this xkcd comic (and its inspiration, the Discovery Channel commercial.) It's catchy, though, so don't say I haven't warned you (I've been humming it randomly most of the weekend.)

[ profile] shadowgem gave me an invite code so that I'd be able to read her FO-entries.

(And to this day, my LJ account is still mostly for reading and not for posting.)

Optical illusions!
Currently wasting time here:

I find it interesting that certain illusions only occur when one is wearing glasses. I've tried looking at the screen without glasses, and it seems to be that you don't get the same effects, but then again, I'm practically blind without my glasses anyway, so I'm probably not the best source to trust on that.

Driving, for one. :P

(For the record, I am getting more comfortable with it, and I've delayed my test until the summer, so by then hopefully I won't kill the examiner or anything. :D)

Total fryage?
The NIC/Ethernet/INTERNET connection on my desktop has just died. I've been meaning to replace the machine for a really long time anyway, so this is a good excuse. (For the record, it also makes funny noises. It's been kicking around since 2002, so what do you really expect? Honestly, I would have pegged it to go under a long time ago. I think we've just been lucky that it's managed to survive this long. We were also running Windows XP on it with 128 MB RAM for the longest time.)

We're not dead in the water or anything, as my laptop is still able to access the Internet, it's just a bit inconvenient, that's all. *sigh*

I am also keen to avoid Vista, if only because all the other computers (save one Linux box which only gets dragged out in emergencies, like now) are running earlier versions of Windows. Maybe I'm just biased, though. Does anyone have experience with Vista? Is it a hard migration from XP?

Oh well. At least the data on the machine is still intact. Not that I ever really recovered from my last major format (May 2005) anyway.

Just a quick note:

I don't know how all you drivers do it. I absolutely cannot get a handle on driving. I'm okay on side roads, when I don't panic, but I fall to pieces on large roads. I hesitate and I'm incredibly nervous and I just don't know what to do. It's not a happy feeling.

Clearly I will never be able to live outside of a large city with a good transit system.

While not the most common compliment I receive, I do hear "You have such good skin/a nice complexion" on occasion.

I dunno, I've never really given my thought to my skin, actually. >_>;;

Non-cryptic, non-emo post o'materialism!
So yesterday, my friend and I decided to go to a local Japanese used book/CD/DVD store. We spent an hour and a half there, and I ended up walking away with:

Cut for shameless materialism! )
